Bodegas Arribes del Duero
Arribes \\ Spain
Arribes is a fascinating little DO in Castilla y León. It used to be known as Arribes del Duero but this sounded too similar to its more exulted neighbour, Ribera del Duero. As you'd expect, the river Duero runs through it, eventually forming the border between Spain and Portugal before winding its way to the sea as the Douro.
There are some white wines in Arribes (chiefly Malvasia) but they're very rare. This is red wine country, and a very particularly sort of red wine at that. The two main grapes of the DO are Juan García and Rufete, the former you won't find elsewhere, the latter you're unlikely to find elsewhere in Spain.
