Cantina Orsogna is an award-winning Abruzzo winery specialising in native and once-endangered grapes of the region such as Perricone, Cococciola and Pecorino. Passerina is another ancient Abruzzese grape that has never really been endangered, being a good cropper; but you hardly ever see varietal Passerina wines and Orsogna make a pretty special one.
They have over 1,000 hectares of vineyards in all, 800 of which are farmed organically. Sat in the foothills of the Maiella range, part of the Apennine mountains, and just 15 kilometres from the sea, large day-night temperature swings and superb ventilation in the vineyards - a terrific site for growing even the fussiest of grapes.
Cantina Orsogna was named Italian Winery of the Year at Vinitaly 2012.
