Portal del Montsant
Catalunya | Spain
Montsant DO is home to some of Spain’s very best full-bodied reds. Sited down the hill from higher regarded Priorat, the wines share many qualities with their pricier, loftier neighbours, though are more approachable and tend to be fruitier.
Portal del Montsant was set up in 2003 in the old Marcá co-op cellar, itself built in the early 1900s. The vineyards are small parcels of varying aspects and elevation, on average 60-years-old, and covering approximately 30 hectares at altitudes of 700-800 metres.
Santbru is a blend of old vine Samsó (the local variety of Carignan) and Garnacha, and gives the wines of Priorat more than a run for their money. It comes from 70-year-old vines dotted around five distinct vineyards, and is aged for 16 months in new French oak (225 and 500 litre barrels). Very dark, with an arresting aroma, bags of spice and herbs and supreme length.
